The Living RoomThe 18 inch rule
—optimally, you should have at least 18 inches of floor space around the edges of the rug to make it look coordinated to the room.5’ by 8’
—keep the legs of furniture off the rug, positioned around it. Putting furniture legs on a small rug will overwhelm the room and make the room look cluttered.8’ by 10’
—put the front legs of furniture on the edges of the rug. This will visually connect the furniture and lend a sense of harmony to the room.9’ by 12’
—Place all the legs of the couches on the rug.The Dining Room
The rug needs to be large enough to keep all four legs of the chairs on the rug even when they are pulled away from the table. Remember to keep an 18” space between the walls and the rug.The Bedroom
One popular placement of a rug in the bedroom is under the bed so that when getting out of bed people can put their feet on the rug, not on the floor—about 24” on each side. The size of the rug depends on the size of the bed, but the rug should cover the floor under the bed as well. Remember, if the rug is too small it will detract from the look of the room.
If the bed is one twin bed placed against a wall, put the area rug next to the bed, and if two twin beds, a rug in between them.
In a sitting area in the bedroom, follow the rules for the living room.
