About Area Rugs

Some things to consider when buying area rugs

An area rug needs to fit in your room aesthetically, complementing the décor of the room, but also in terms of size and shape. There are certain rules that designers follow that assure their success, and will assure yours as well.

The size and shape matter—if the rug is too undersized, the room may look small and uncoordinated as if the furniture around it is floating in the air. It needs to be just the right size for the area you want to cover.

Map out your room to scale—it’s a good idea to do a scale drawing of your room, considering doorways and placement of furniture before buying the rug.

Take photos of the room—Flooring Nerd can help you with color, design and shape that will complement your room.

Consider trying out the rug in the room—some people try out two or three rugs before coming up with the right choice.

The Living Room

The 18 inch rule—optimally, you should have at least 18 inches of floor space around the edges of the rug to make it look coordinated to the room.

5’ by 8’—keep the legs of furniture off the rug, positioned around it. Putting furniture legs on a small rug will overwhelm the room and make the room look cluttered.

8’ by 10’—put the front legs of furniture on the edges of the rug. This will visually connect the furniture and lend a sense of harmony to the room.

9’ by 12’—Place all the legs of the couches on the rug.

The Dining Room
The rug needs to be large enough to keep all four legs of the chairs on the rug even when they are pulled away from the table. Remember to keep an 18” space between the walls and the rug.

The Bedroom
One popular placement of a rug in the bedroom is under the bed so that when getting out of bed people can put their feet on the rug, not on the floor—about 24” on each side. The size of the rug depends on the size of the bed, but the rug should cover the floor under the bed as well. Remember, if the rug is too small it will detract from the look of the room.

If the bed is one twin bed placed against a wall, put the area rug next to the bed, and if two twin beds, a rug in between them.

In a sitting area in the bedroom, follow the rules for the living room.
